Human rights lawyer Louise Christian joins Tommy Sheridan, Scottish Socialist Party MSP, for the launch of his book Imagine this Friday at a London rally as part of the Socialist Alliance general election campaign.
Co-written by fellow SSP member Alan McCombes, Imagine: A socialist vision for the 21st century has been described by John Pilger as “a powerful book which articulates the desires of the disenfranchised.”
Film director and SA supporter Ken Loach has also endorsed the book: “It’s easy to know what we are fighting against, not easy to say what we are fighting for. This excellent book starts to answer that question. And how do we get there?”
The socialist solution will be proffered by Ms Christian, SA candidate for Hornsey and Wood Green where she is challenging Home Office minister Barbara Roche. She will be appearing at Friday’s rally on her return from the US where she has been visiting American victims of the Paddington rail disaster in her capacity as their lawyer.
She said: “This government is doing things that before it was elected seemed inconceivable. It is attacking jury trials so that people will face the unfairness, class injustice and race bias in a magistrates’ court. The public transport system is collapsing around our ears. The railways are near meltdown. Asylum seekers are stigmatised, treated with indignity and humiliation.
“There is a huge gap between New Labour and what ordinary people want. We are on the verge of a turning point. We have to find ways of getting out and reaching people who feel abandoned by New Labour.”
Imagine rally – Friday 23 February, 6.30pm, Bloomsbury Central Baptist Church, 253 Shaftesbury Avenue, London WC2
